Word, Music & Visual Affirmations: A Creative Writing & Collage Workshop
taught by Thandiwe Shiphrah
Join us for a day-long exploration of word, sound & imagery that draws on your personal interests, your unique perspective, and the artistic potential of ordinary words and phrases. The morning will be devoted to generating ideas for poems and experimenting with literary devices that give poetry its music, including assonance, alliteration, rhyme, repetition, and onomatopoeia. We’ll engage in strategic use of the dictionary, allowing it steer us into unexpected artistic territories. Afterwards, we will respond to our own writings by creating collages to artfully affirm our dreams and aspirations and energize our personal creative spaces. If you are curious about how writing, music, and visual art intersect, this workshop is for you!
No previous writing or artmaking experience required. Beneficial for writers and artmakers at all levels. Students are encouraged to bring their personal journals, but there will be plenty of writing materials on hand. They may also want to bring copies of personal photographs (no originals) and other memorabilia to include in their visual affirmations.
