January Jump into Fabric Dyeing!
with visiting textile artist Lexie Abra Millikan
Art & Soul is pleased to announce that Paducah-based textile artist Lexie Abra Millikan (formerly Johnson) returns this year for a fabulous fabric-dyeing series on Saturdays in January! Lexie’s class last winter was wildly popular, and so we’ve invited her to expand her offerings for 2018 – which means a more in-depth exploration of fabric dyeing fun for all of us!
Space is limited so register early. No previous dyeing experience is necessary, although those with experience are welcome, too! Join us for one or both classes, plus optional half-day Open Studio Dyeing Play opportunities to boot!
Supply fees are included in class prices and cover all necessary dyes and chemicals, and each participant will receive a couple yards of plain white print cloth with which to experiment. Some extra fabrics and Shibori tools will be provided, as well as old shirt smocks available for your use. Participants should bring a sketchbook and apron, and wear clothing that can get messy and dye-splattered. Feel free to bring extra fabrics or yarns for additional experimentation (100% cotton, silk, rayon, & wool work best.) Your extra fabrics can be remnants or clothing, pillowcases, scarves, bags, or other all-natural fabric items.
Cancellation policy: you may request a refund (minus any PayPal fees and a $10 cancellation fee) up to seven (7) days prior to the scheduled date of the class or workshop. No refund is available after that date. Refunds are also unavailable if you do not show up or if you leave an event early for any reason.
Combined Workshop: Indigo & MX Fiber Reactive Dye
Saturday, January 20, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
$165/$145 members (includes $30 supply fee)
Optional 2nd Day Guided Open Studio: Sunday Jan 21, 1:00 – 5:00; $50/$40 members
Due to inclement weather, the January 13 & 20 workshops are being combined.
Wow, what electric and dreamy blues! And mysterious disappearing hues! You’ll learn how to set up, care for, and maintain an indigo vat, and explore various ombre, low-water immersion, and Shibori techniques – folding, clamping, stitching and binding – to create beautiful and graphic resists.
You'll also learn a versatile and vibrant dye process applicable to all sorts of creative endeavors – the bright and brilliant colors of MX procion dyes on cotton fabrics! These are great for folks who want to create unique designs for quilting, sewing, and other craft projects, or to incorporate into mixed-media art-making. We’ll experiment with thickening the dyes for painting or screen-printing directly on fabric, as well as learn how to discharge areas of MX dye from our material. You’ll get a chance to mix up lots of colors and try various methods for mottled and ombre effects. This dye process is perfect for those who want to make clothing or other functional objects since it works well with muslin, canvas, velvet, and of course cotton!
Those who complete this day-long workshop can return the following day for a half-day Open Studio with Lexie to continue the dyeing journey. Details below.
2nd Day Guided Open-Studio with Lexie:
1:00 – 5:00 pm; cost: $50/$40 members
You’ve learned the processes; now continue on your journey! Return to the studio for a dip back into the dyes . . . Lexie will be available to mix up new batches, lend a hand, and answer your questions. Deepen your exploration and gain more experience. Sign up now or wait to decide after completing your daylong dive on Saturday. (The open studio will be limited to those who attend that weekend’s day-long class.)
