In celebration of National Poetry Month:
Dogwood Winter by Beth A. Richardson
Dogwood Winter
Â
In the springÂ
when the warm weather takes a step backÂ
and the cold returnsÂ
Â
the old ones sayÂ
it's redbud winterÂ
it's pear tree winterÂ
it's blackerry winterÂ
Â
this yearÂ
dogwood winter has beenÂ
cool and lovely and longÂ
Â
the dogwood blooms began to openÂ
the coolness stepped forwardÂ
and the blooms stayed and stayed and stayedÂ
Â
feasts for the eyesÂ
for the heartÂ
Â
the dogwoods are dropping their blooms and leafing outÂ
but in my mind and in my memory I see the beautyÂ
Â
I will rememberÂ
for a long timeÂ
this dogwood winter.
