Service Description

In this hands-on class, Nashville artist Robin Wolfenden introduces participants to the cyanotype printing process while exploring the idea of balance through Japanese rock stacking, or Ishi-hana. This meditative practice symbolizes patience, harmony, and a deep connection to nature—values that closely align with the cyanotype process itself. Participants will begin by learning basic cyanotype techniques, including coating paper, exposing prints, and developing images. Using stacked stones as an outline and inspiration, the class will explore balance through light and dark, positive and negative space, and the interplay of graphic and organic forms. Students will physically play with balancing rocks, then translate that experience onto paper using objects, negative films, and added color. For those interested in further experimentation, the class will also introduce collage techniques by cutting cyanotype papers into stone-like shapes and fitting them together to create visually balanced compositions. This class is designed for beginners and experienced artists alike and encourages both mindful making and creative exploration. Skill Level: This class is suitable for adults and teens with no prior experience in photography or printmaking. Artists, designers, photographers, and curious beginners are all welcome. Materials: Participants are encouraged to bring small organic objects and foliage, or personal imagery (converted to negatives) that cast a shadow to further personalize their work. Prepare to dress for the weather, as we will be moving from indoors to outdoors in the sun to process our prints. *** Fee: $100 (Members 15% discount with coupon code at checkout) Art & Soul classes are for ages 17 and up. If you would like to request an exception, please contact the studio to see if the teacher can make accommodations for younger participants.
